The Cave And Gil

Good grief, when I walked Kimball at 7:00, there was snow on the mountains above Ventura. They were picturesque, all right, but hey, chilly. It warmed up later and I left a bit after breakfast to pick up various items at WinCo. Went from there to The Cave--early, but that was okay.
It was crowded, but what was open was the comfortable corner banquette (or whatever it's called--an L-shaped sofa-like arrangement, with cushions), and I was pleased to be seated there. Nancy came a few minutes later and we both ordered the cheese plate. You select three or four cheeses or, if you want, substitute cold meats, but I went for the cheese alone. It's served with a kind of salty jam, grapes, marmalade, thinly-sliced green apples, almonds, and toasted baguette. Along with a good Chardonnay, it was delicious; I thought I'd take some home, but ate it all. We had a nice, leisurely lunch and I got home at 2:30. Good thing, because Gil Y. called shortly after and was ready to come over for my laptop. I met him at the entrance and took him to my place.
He was here for only an hour, so it cost me only thirty bucks, but happy day, he did everything: got my printer connected, reinstall my Apache word, put my Dionne Quint pictures on a flash drive in a folder, and other stuff I can't even remember, but all's well. He turned out to be a nice guy, too; his regular job is in a hospice, I'm not sure in what capacity.
Anyway, he left about 4:00 and I immediately took off for town and the museum-to-library walk. Stopped into Goodwill and bought a four-opening frame for the school pics my granddaughters and great-grandsons sent.
John Callaghan of Poinsettia Toastmasters had planned a Zoom meeting for last evening at 6:30. (This is a sort of virtual meeting via our computers.)  I was all set for it, but unfortunately, John called to say that, for some reason, he didn't have an Internet connection and we'd have to postpone until tonight at 7:00. No problem for me and I'm looking forward to it.

Toastmasters At Fern's

Kimball, breakfast, and so on. I remembered I meant to send my tablet to someone and carefully padded and wrapped it. Looked up more on the Dutch painting and painter for my talk at Toastmasters and rehearsed it several times.
Went into Craigslist, called a computer person listed there and he'll come at 3:00 today. That would mean I'd be cutting it too close for our Tuesday movie and wine, so I called Nancy and suggested we skip the movie this week and go for lunch today instead. She agreed happily and we'll meet at 12:30 at The Cave.
Did some cleaning and food prep, plus spent time on the computer and continued to rehearse. Interestingly, two sources differ on the artist's birthplace: One says he was born in Antwerp, the other  in London where his parents went to escape religious persecution. Guess I'll never know, but I'll incorporate the conflicting locations into my talk.
After lunch, I did something unusual for me: I lay down on the couch, covered myself with my cozy "fur" throw, and dozed off. Got up about 2:30, refreshed, and set off for town. Walked the walk and, after about 45 in the library, back, then home. I had salmon ready for dinner, but decided to have it tonight instead, and just had shrimp and veggies.
Got the Fern's for the meeting at 7:00 and darn--I had forgotten it was called for 6:30, so was late. Somebody, probably Fern herself, had provided refreshments, which were substantial: chicken and veggie kabobs, pumpkin pie, and glory be, red wine. If I had known that would be there, I would have skipped dinner, but I indulged anyway.
My talk went well and got high marks and overall, it was a good meeting. Home a bit after 9:00 and I stayed up for t.v. and fruit another hour after that.

Okay Day

I'd say an okay day, pretty much.
Did Kimball, then the usual Sunday thing. (Am I in a rut? Yes, but I like it that way.) Spent a lot of time trying to get the printer on, but no luck. Called HP, which makes the laptop and was told to call Canon, which made the printer. Will do so today.
I did call Nancy to have her remind me of what bread she gets that's so good. She said it was Killer Dave's, full of seeds and fiber, and I made a note of it. After that, we talked about what we're reading. What a pleasure to talk to someone who doesn't think T.V. and CDs are the be-all and end-all of culture. It's one thing to enjoy those things--I do occasionally--but I know people who literally (sorry!) never read books.
Nance and I have similar tastes--she's into bios and history, but dips into fiction now and again--she electronically, I the old-fashioned way. I know I can get books on my kindle, but I prefer print. Plus, I'm at the library every single day and there's nothing easier than to take out what I want. I mentioned that I have a book of Emily Dickinson's poems and she expressed interest--is not into poetry at all, which I have been for years. I'll have to share some with her one of these days.  Anyway, it gave me a lift to talk with her and we're looking forward to our Tuesday excursion.
Went to Ralph's and found the bread, plus a few other items. Had lunch and drove to town...
...what was this? The museum parking lot was filled and so were all the other park places I know. I noticed people walking with lawn chairs to the small park next to the museum and figured there was something going on. Reversing my usual direction, I parked at the library and walked back to the park.
Why, it was a musical festival. There were some chairs set up with a sign that read "VIP Area";
figured I'd sit there until someone asked me to leave. Nobody did and I stayed for about an hour, listening to wonderful violin and keyboard players, plus a classical guitar player from Spain.

Just A Day

Walked Kimball, etc. Called brother Frank and we had a nice talk.  He said he'd like to take a train to L.A. to see an old friend and could stop off to see me. I'm not sure how realistic that is, but I hope we can eventually do that.
Called El and she tried to talk me through getting my printer to print from this machine. No luck yet, although I was able to copy, but not from the Internet. El and Greg were going to Santa Barbara to take his mother to lunch for her 86th birthday.
Went to several stores for onions, Brussels sprouts, blueberries, asparagus, and other produce. Drove to town after lunch for the usual.  Lots of people in town and everybody seemed to be with somebody except me.

Going On

Walked Kimball in a chill wind, then changed and went to T.O.P.S. Annoyingly, I seem to have gained four tenths of a pound, so I'm at 130. That's still 51 pounds off, so I guess I'm okay with it. Sharon brought a huge bag of oranges from Carolyn and I took lots. It still seems incredible that people grow these things in their own yards.
Breakfast, then continuing the never-ending saga of putting family pictures in albums. I'm far from finished, but quit to clean up the bedroom, finally stowing some of the Acting for Amateurs stuff I had here and there.
I called niece Maureen to ask about her dad, my brother, Frank; I've called him several times with no answer. She said he's actually doing better, maybe because of the medication, and is even driving again. However, the answering machine is off, as he forgets to listen to it. Hmm...that made me a little nervous, especially the driving part. Will call him again today.
After lunch, I set off for town, but then it occurred to me I needed to do a wash. It doesn't seem right for me to use the laundry on weekends, when people who work may need to use the facilities, so I jettisoned my town walk and went back. Put the stuff in, then Suzanne rang the bell. Her car is back in the shop--a gasket this time--and she asked if I could drive her to work today at 7:00 am. Sure thing, but it turned out it was ready yesterday, after all, so I didn't need to. We also made a date for next Friday for me to take her out for a birthday lunch.
Aside from that, I'm continuing to use this laptop and am getting better at it, but still need a lot of practice. I hope Anthony calls and comes today, so I can get my printer hooked up.

Still Getting Used to It...

After the usual, I spent a lot of time trying to get used to this keyboard. It seems to be a little easier to type now. I had to call Frank, who was in Manhattan (he and Barb were there to see Hamilton), so he could contact Comcast and name me as an associate or authorized user or some stupid thing. It worked, as I now get my email on the laptop...
...and on my phone. I went over to Cricket and upgraded to the tune of fifty-three bucks--I'm hazy as to why--and finally have email on it, too.
Other than that, I just puttered around, had lunch, drove to town, walked the walk, and other mundane stuff. I still don't have the printer hooked up, but hope to hire somebody to do that and answer a few questions.

Laptop

Damn, damn, damn! I just wrote out a whole saga of the last two days, pressed "save," and an error message came up and the whole thing is gone! Okay, I'll just outline--I like this new laptop, but it's so hard get used to typing on it.
Tuesday: the usual in the morning, then met Nancy for our movie and wine day. Saw The Post at the downtown theatre; we both thought it was absorbing. Whether it's more truth than truthiness is debatable, though. Strolled two doors down to Dargan's for our Chardonnay and "appetizers" (which
cost as much as lunch would have). Talked and talked, then parted. I went to the library for a bit, then back to my car, parked at the museum, as usual.
I had left my computer tower at Office Depot in the morning and boy, was it hard to be without it. However, I managed by relying on my phone, books, and t.v.
Wednesday: After Kimball, I spent the whole morning cleaning the place. Looks good. Office Depot called to say laptop was ready. Went and got it with all my stuff on it, but needed Ellen's help to use it. She came over after a long day at school, dear girl, and got it further set up, so I can use it. I'm still feeling my way and I know it will take a fairly long learning curve, but I 'm glad to bought it--I think. However, I'm still having a problem with getting into my e-mail. Called X-finity and now must call my former next-door neighbor, Frank, and he has to call them.

Busy And Blog

What with all the things on my to-do list, it was a fairly busy day. After Kimball and breakfast, I checked my e-mail and found a note from Connie asking for feedback about the A. Comes A. event.  I'll respond, but since I had a number of friends and relatives come, I decided to ask them, too. Sent out an e-mail to them.
I was delighted to see that my friend, Marge, who's exactly a decade older than than I am, had commented on my Facebook page, so called her.  Her health is still precarious, but she sounded a bit better than she had when I called her last.  Her insomnia has eased up a bit, although she has a (new) aching back. Somebody was coming to the house with an X-ray machine. Anyway, we had a good talk.
Went to Wal-Mart and the 99-cent store for various items, including a pill splitter, as Doc says I'm now supposed to take only half of the Atorasatin(?). Why she couldn't have simply made the prescription for half the milligrams is beyond me, but it wasn't too difficult to halve them. Also bought the vitamin D 12 I've been supposed to be taking and forgot about.
Went from there to Cricket to see if they could get my e-mail to load. Amanda wasn't in and I was subjected to less than satisfactory service from the one guy there. No sense in going in to all that, but I left with angry words. I'll try to get back there today.
Had a better experience at Office Max. Brought the laptop in because I decided to have them put on the virus protection, plus transfer my other stuff from the desktop. I think the charge isn't much more, if at all, then somebody I found somewhere, and I just want to get it done. Incidentally, the guy I bought the laptop from on Friday was about the worse salesperson ever, alternating between indifference and brusqueness. When I brought the laptop in yesterday, I happened to see the manager and mentioned that. He said the guy doesn't work there anymore. Good. I got Anthony, who was very courteous and knowledgeable.  But here's the thing: I have to take my "tower" in to have them transfer everything and will do that this morning. It will be at least 24 hours before it's done, so I won't be on-line or on-blog for  a while.
Met the widder gang at Sizzler for dinner. It was fun, as ever--we have two new men, including Les, with whom I chatted (born in Hawaii of Japanese descent) and another I didn't meet. Nance and I firmed up plans for our "movie and The Cave Tuesday" date today. I also have the Zoom thing at 6:30 pm; still not sure what all that entails.

Maritime Museum Sunday

After Kimball and the usual Sunday rituals, I dressed in my fishmonger outfit and took off for the museum. As I drove into the harbor area, I noticed there were crowds of people and lots happening on a beautiful, sunny--but warm, not hot--day.
Checked my gear--large basket with four fish and underneath, my phone, car keys, and comb--and went to my station. Boy, was it jammed.  I had lots of family groups and just groups. Early on, I was delighted to greet Nancy and her son and daughter-in-law. They howled when I incorporated into my script, "we Dutch women love to knit; in fact, a dear friend of mine knitted me these socks." I then pulled up my skirt and showed them the purple socks Nancy had made me.
Lots of my other friends came, too: Sue, Mac, and a friend of theirs; the other Sue and Cece from Toastmasters; Jan from Dudley House; Tammy from Caregivers; Jana from T.O.P.S.; and Diane and husband from the park. Best of all, my dear niece, Carolyn, and nephew, Steve, along with their combined three children, strolled in--what fun! I had no idea they would come all the way from Santa Barbara, but they saw the info on Facebook and made the trip. Actually, they enjoyed it a lot, and Steve approached me about participating as a sea captain next time.
I took about ten minutes to go up to the makeshift break room for a small piece of pizza and a little  salad, but spent most of the four hours on my feet.  (A chair and water was provided for each impersonator, but there were so many visitors I rarely sat.) I was fine with that, but as on Saturday, I was pretty tired by the time I got home. Actually, I consider that a good thing; this was such an enjoyable experience
But hoo boy, do I have a lot of errands to catch up with!

Maritime Museum Saturday

Walked Kimball, then did this and that--what? don't remember-after breakfast until it was time to shower and dress for the Maritime Museum. I wasn't quite as early this time, but early enough. It turned out to be a fun day.
The first person to come in was my friend, Bobbi R., from T.O.P.S., along with a few others. Later, my park pal, Irene, came, then Deb M., whom I know from VCS, with two friends. It was good to see them, but I stayed in character and gave them my Dutch best.  During a slight lull in visitors, I went up to the landing office for ten minutes, where a nice spread was laid out. Had lunch with two fellow volunteers before going back down.  In between "customers," I chatted up several of the others, including Rhonda, who does a great French accent portraying Queen Charlotte, and somebody playing "Britt," whose real name I forget. There were lots of others, including several men.
The most fun was when children came and I was able to interact with them. The program included questions about each character's talk; if answered correctly at the end, participants would get a free book about the museum. Since I had written in my script that my "husband"--the man painted into the picture of 1622--resembled Santa Claus because of his long white beard, Connie put the question "who is he?" in the program. In the middle of all this, a man from the Ventura Star came in and videotaped Connie, then took some stills of me. I'll have to check to see if Connie appears on the web page and I in the paper.
Connie asked if we could stay until 4:30--sure--and she gathered us for a little memorial talk about a very active, longtime volunteer named Bob Little, who died a few days ago. We left after that.
Chairs were provided, but I didn't sit often, as it was busy. At the end of the day, I was pretty tired--unusual for me, but I had stood most of the day and the routine was different. It was fun, though, and I'm looking forward to going back today.

Two Tops: Meeting and Lap

Another pretty strenuous day.  After walking Kimball, I changed, then took off for T.O.P.S. I was very early, as were Luisa, Jana, and Madeline and it was a bit chilly.  Lennie came soon with the key and we went in.
Finally, at long last, I broke the fifty-pound barrier. I weighed in at 130.4, which means I'm 51 1/2 pounds down. The meeting itself was the usual rambling, unfocused time waster and we didn't get out of there until almost 10.
Home, had breakfast, then took a load to the wash place. While it washed, then dried, I got more photos and memorabilia organized and in the binders. I have much more to do, but it's better than it was. Finally got around to e-mailing members of my acting classes to suggest lunch next week or so. We could go back to Marie Callender's, but maybe Yolanda's would be better.
Suzanne rang my bell and presented me with a vase full of lovely, tiny orchids. One of her co-workers grows them and gave her a lot of them. They're exactly like miniature--very miniature-- versions of  the orchid corsages we used to get for proms at HSHS.  I like them better tiny. I mentioned to Suzanne that I had noticed a beautiful vase of florist flowers at her door yesterday and she said her brother and SIL had sent them to her for her birthday. Darn, it didn't know it was her birthday, but told her I want to take her out for lunch next week (she's meeting her sister and SIL in Santa Barbara for the weekend). She said she'd be delighted and then invited me to come to dinner to meet Loretta, who works at St. John's. She and her husband, Fred, whom I've already met, lost their home, and apartment, in the fire and moved her after that.
Went for my town walk after, but didn't stay at the library. I needed groceries and went to WinCo from there. Got rockfish, fresh shrimp, and lots of produce. Stopped across the street at Office Max and bought the damn laptop. Hope I don't regret it. I drove to Ellen's school, as it was after 4:00 and I knew she'd still be there preparing for next week. She was and I showed her the laptop, but didn't stay.

H & D Toastmasters

Walked, then spent hours--well, it seemed like hours--on the phone with the doctor's office, plus CVS.  Finally, I got the pharmacist at the CVS on Kimball (yes, just down from the park).  I had specifically told the Primary Medical staff I wanted Rxes sent to the  store on Victoria, just a short walk from me. They don't seem to have understood that.
Anyway, the pharmacist said Dr. J. had ordered 15 pills. The cost? Sixty-five bucks!  Hell, no, I won't pay that. Called Caremark and was told--this time--that it was in the mail and would arrive by Saturday. Okay, I give up. I just hope it gets here before I succumb to cholesterol poisoning or whatever.
I agreed to bring the "snack" to Toastmasters (the Humor & Drama group; Poinsettia was on Monday) last evening, so assembled frozen and fresh fruit. Decided to bring some rice cakes, too, and put them in a basket. For myself, I cut up a head of cabbage and put it in the slow cooker with sesame seeds and chipped (or whatever) garlic. I had some when I got home from my town walk and yum, was it good. Stopped on the way to town to get the car washed. Got a valentine card from Betty and called her to thank; also got one from Deb Mansfield and I called her, too.
I arrived early (so what else is new?) to put out the fruit and rice cakes at the meeting. I was evaluater for Cherie's talk about the fire, as she lives in Oakview. I gave her good marks, although she has a tendency to ramble. Remarkably, she has three large dogs. And three large cats. And two cockateals (I don't know how to spell it and neither does illiterate SpellCheck). She brought pictures of the animals.
The other speaker didn't show up, so Perennial Fern filled in with a mentor/mentee talk. Jeez, I wonder if it was aimed toward me. She's my mentor, but I  just don't want to get further involved in this. I enjoy the meetings and so on, but have no desire to "progress" through their tiers of membership. She keeps urging me and I don't wanna. Well, the fruit and rice cakes went over big.
Got home a bit after 9:00, then had to unwind, so didn't get to bed until 10:00.

Maritime Museum

Busy day. Walked Kimball, had breakfast, then jumped in the shower. Dressed in my Dutch woman's costume and got to the Maritime Museum by 11:00.
But darn, I had the time wrong. I had thought Director Connie had asked me to get there a half hour early for the noon start, but that was actually at 1:00. However, I enjoyed talking to some of the other volunteers and looking at the exhibits. Connie liked my outfit a lot and I must say it looked pretty good. She provided three more fish, much more realistic than mine, so I think I'll just have those three in the basket. Others gathered, including four men, and changed into their costumes. We then went through all the talks. Mine was second, and I did pretty well, although my talk took more than two minutes and should have been no longer than 90 seconds. No prob, as it'll be easy to cut down. What with all the characters--I'd say about twenty of us--we weren't out of there until almost 3:00.
I high-tailed it home, changed and stopped at CVS to see if my atorvastatin was in. No, it  wasn't, and when I called the doctor's office, I was told it must have been an oversight and would be ordered. Drove to town, walked to the library, and where I got a call with a recording from CVS to say it was "too soon" to get the Rx refilled.  AAGH! Why didn't they tell me this in the first place? Well, the hell with it, I hope it won't be a problem to skip it for a few days. Must call Caremark to get refills of the others.
Betty called on my way home to see if I had gotten her card. I hadn't, so it will probably come today.
El called to say she got my Valentine card. We laughed over the fact it was in Spanish (I had asked somebody in the store to translate) and I had crossed out "friend" and written what I thought was "daughter"--hiji.  However, El said daughter is spelled hija. Also, I had put what I thought was "love from Mom," but she said it meant more like "love to Mama." Well, she got the idea.

Wonder

Fun day. Walked Kimball early, fooled around on the Internet, then went to WinCo for watermelon and blueberries. Combined same and put in a container to take to the movies. I just had a hard-boiled egg--for protein--beforehand and left for the Regency about noon.
Met Nancy and we saw Wonder. Just as I suspected, it was pretty predictable and quite sappy, but enjoyable enough. We went from there to our Tuesday winey-poo session, of course, and this time, I caved to The Cave and paid five bucks for a wine card. I'm still a little hazy about how it works, but you pay ahead of time--I think--then help yourself at a kind of wine bar, the cost going on your card.  Nance had her usual champagne, I Chardonnay, and we both got their wonderful in-house potato chips, then Parmesan French fries. (Yes, I eat salty carbs when I go out.)  Talked and talked and talked, of course, and didn't leave until almost 5:00. Said goodbye, went home, and got some things put together for the Maritime Museum rehearsal at noon today.
Yoicks! Writing that reminds me I'd better study my scripts.

Toastmasters At The Brewery

Well, I'm clearly falling into absolute decadence.  To begin with, I didn't do my town walk on Sunday, although that was Ellen's fault (oh, who are you kidding, Mimi, she dropped you off at 4:30; you had plenty of time).  I didn't walk Kimball yesterday, either and that was Dr. Jennings' fault, because I had an 8:30 appointment (well, you made the appointment!) and I had to shower first.
Anyway, doc gave me a clean bill of elderly health. I wish she wouldn't keep marveling at my good condition re my age; guess her other older patients are doddering. She took me off the Amlodipine, but wants me to stay on the Ramipril for  now. They're both medications to lower BP and mine runs low, so that puzzles me. However, in the office, my BP was 110 over something and she approved. Weight: 131. Got a sweet Valentine card from my sweet girl, Ellen, and called to thank her--what a sweetie--or do I repeat myself?
Had breakfast late, then went over to the store for blueberries. Ran into Carole and we had a long talk in the aisle. Went from there to the P.O. to mail Betty a little present, plus a Valentine card to somebody else. Dropped off at the Lexington notes to the two residents there who had come into our Humor & Drama Toastmasters meeting last time--invited them to do the same on Thursday. Lunched, then off to town for my walk. Purposely went past The Brewery, which is where our Poinsettia Toastmasters meeting was a few hours later.
That went well, in fact, it was a lot of fun, especially because most of us had a cold brew on the table.  I got a local, which approximated Blue Moon. The only problem with the place is, no food is sold there. I'd much sooner eat something when I drink beer, so I had only a small one, but it was tasty.  I was one of the evaluaters and I won the ribbon for best. I'm always bemused by the fact that members vote on "best speech," "best evaluater," and so on, but I guess the idea is for members to hone their talks. I said I'd give a talk next time.
Unfortunately, I spoke--or wrote--too soon about my computer. It's doing exactly the same thing it had before: going black until I unplug and replug. Damn.

It's Alive!

Kimball, breakfast, crossword--the usual Sunday morning.  Ellen called and asked if I wanted to have her look at my computer and see if she could follow older son's suggestions to see if the problems could be remedied. Sure thing, and I suggested she bring her lunch (we're both following different diet regimens) and eat it here. She agreed and got here about noon.
She spent at least an hour and a half on the damn thing, doing the drive/sync thing and vacuuming the innards. She called her brother-in-law in NM and he walked her through some of it. She didn't finish until almost 2:00, when we had lunch.  So far, so good--I was thrilled to see it was "alive" when I got up and it seems a lot faster.
After, we went to Office Max to look at Laptops for me. It was a tossup as to whether I should get the same one she just bought (it's lighter) or one that's a hundred bucks higher. I got  all the facts on the latter and that may be the way I'll go. It's  on sale until Saturday, so I'll mull it over.
El drove us to the other shopping center; while she went to Target, I stopped at Cricket to see how I could get my e-mail updated on my phone. Amanda showed me how, but damned if I could do it once I got home.
I spent ages deleting stuff from my documents and I hope that helps the overall speed of this thing. It does seem to be doing better--with some quirks--and so far, hasn't suddenly stopped, as it had been doing. We'll see.
Got an e-mail from Nancy, suggesting we see the movie Wonder on Tuesday. I looked at the trailer and frankly, it looks as if it's predictable and saccharine: Little boy with a facial deformity (or injury) goes to school, is sad and lonely, then befriended by classmate or two, and becomes BMOC. Or something along those lines. However, I'll go if Nance wants to see it.

A Fall And Pat

Walked Kimball and saw Irene, as usual; gave her two invites to the "Art Comes Alive" event for her and Diane.
Home and did the usual. Chopped my lettuce and other things for lunch salad (I like to have it ready early) and went to get the cabbage I bought at WinCo, which I was going to cut up and put it in the slow cooker. To my annoyance, I realize it was iceberg lettuce, not cabbage. I know it was in a bin marked cabbage because it was next to the red cabbage. The doofy produce person obviously can't tell the difference.
Went to Office Max and had the "Art..." flyer copied and shrunk to half size. I want to hand them out at the Toastmaster's meeting tomorrow and the one I have is 8 x10.  There's no sense in everybody getting them that big. Copied it at home. We're going to meet at The Brewery on the corner of Santa Clara and Oak, which I know well, so I took a slightly different route to the library to pass it. Thought I'd stop in and look where we'd be. I went in the side door and...
...fell right down, not noticing the step.  I fell hard on my right knee and was sprawled on the floor. It was crowded and people stared, but the only one who came to help was a young waiter. I wouldn't be surprised if customers thought I was an old drunk and maybe homeless. It's terrible how you get so inured to suffering that you shrug and turn away.  Luckily, I quickly knew I didn't do any great damage; I was able to stand and to walk. I do have two pretty deep scrapes on my knee, but I resumed my walk to the library. On the way back, I stopped into Spice Topia and they let me put a flyer there. I also have one in the Japanese restaurant--must see if Diane wants to lunch there sometime.
Called Nancy to see how her allergy is and she said much better, so we're on for a movie and The Cave on Tuesday.  I had e-mailed my children for their advice on the laptop thing; Patrick and Mike responded so far. I had looked at some at Office Max.
Today, Pat would have been 87 years old if he was still on this earth.  I think of him, but less often than I used to.  It's funny that when I picture him, I see him not as a sick and angry old man, but as I knew him first when we were young--sigh.
Note: I forgot to mention yesterday that I went to the AAA to straighten something out about my car insurance. I wasn't sure whether they took out the payment automatically and I double paid them for February. Got it taken care of and that's off my mind. The reason I add it here is because I sometimes use the blog to keep track of such things.

T.O.P.S., Etc.

I went early to Kimball, as I wanted to get to Trinity Lutheran early for T.O.P.S.  I had told Lenny (Lenore) I'd be guest leader and I had also promised to pick Suzanne up in Oxnard. Why early to T.O.P.S. ?  Because I (the sucker of the world) bought two hot fudge sundaes at one of the thrift stores. They're artificial, of course, but look incredibly real--and yummy. I set them in the middle of the table where we sit and used them in an antidote about weight.
Get weighed and for the first time since I started losing, eleven months ago, I gained--one and a half pounds up and the scale read 133 pounds. I was puzzled, but sanguine about it, figuring it was just a blip. I had hoped to hit the 50 pounds off mark, but now, I was back to 48.3...
...I thought. However, when Luisa, the weight reporter, announced the totals, all thirteen of us were listed as having gained. Now this just couldn't possibly be. We agreed there was something wrong with the scale or whatever; let's hope it remedies itself  next time.
I guided a discussion on weighty (heh-heh) topics, then had the group hear truisms on the subject and decide which were true, false, or debatable. They were very engaged and several thanked me for leading the program. (I'd be more puffed up about it if I didn't know the bar is set pretty low.) Sharon brought some oranges from Carolyn's tree, which I happily shared. Suzanne called, then texted me to say her car would be fixed in a half hour and she didn't need me to pick her up.
Took a load of wash to the place and while I waited for first wash, then dry, I wrote up most of my talk for the seventeenth-century Dutch woman I'm impersonating next weekend.
After  lunch, I took my usual town walk and asked the library if they would put up a poster on the "Art Comes Alive" event at the maritime museum.  Librarian agreed and I was also able to have them displayed at the museum and two shops.
Stopped at Suzanne's when I got home and chatted with her for a bit. She and her sister and sister-in-law are meeting in Santa Barbara next Saturday and Sunday for a "girls' weekend out." Hey, nunhood has changed, no question about that.

Stephen's Greek Restaurant

This climate is so different from Jersey. When I walked Kimball, it was in the fifties and I more or less bundled up. After breakfast, though, it was 73 and nice and warm; it stayed about there all day.
Prepared for the leader role at T.O.P.S. today by typing out some questions for discussion and a few other things. All had to do with weight loss and not--as the conversation  often slides into--whose grandson is so cute and other who-gives-a-damn deviations.
Got to Stephen's Greek a little early, but Doris came in shortly, then Sherry. The latter simply had rice pilaf, Doris and I a gyro, which I accompanied with a bottle of Shock Top.  As I don't eat red meat as a rule, the lamb tasted great. We talked, as usual, Sherry as irritating as ever, but little Doris--she's about five feet tall and if she tops 85 pounds, I'd be surprised--rather sweet. Anyway, I enjoyed it (lunch out two days in a row--wow!), then took off for town and my usual walk.
I had requested a book of Emily's poems and it came in. Good grief, it's more than 900 pages, so very inclusive. I look it over at the library, but asked the desk to hold it until I got my car. Did so, drove back, and picked it up.
Went to Grocery Outlet after and got some nice grapes and ground turkey. While there,  I got a call from Gayle Butcher, who's in my widder group. Funnily, she thought she was calling a friend of hers with the same name, but we chatted anyway. She's going on a trip and suggested when she gets back, that we go to the newly refurbished Yolanda's; we'll ask Anna and some others in the group. I said sure, of course, and we'll do that.
Got home about 5:00 to find a note from Suzanne. I had told her I'd pick her up at the auto place in Oxnard this morning after T.O.P.S., so she gave me directions.
Got an e-mail from Sue, telling me the tall ships Lady Washington and the Hawaiian Chieftain sailed into the harbor where she lives today. She sent a picture of the former--stately and beautiful.

BCNN

I had forgotten to turn on the alarm, so slept until 6:15. That was okay, as I had time to do my usual, plus walk Kimball, then get changed for the BCNN meeting. I had volunteered to bring one of the goodies, so put my fruit together. I mixed sliced fresh strawberries and fresh blueberries with frozen cherries, mango, and blueberries and put it in my large white bowl. Put that into a basket I have and lined it with a pretty rose cloth.
Arrived early, but Sue was already there and Doris and Sherry came shortly after. We sat together, as usual I also enjoyed chatting with Terry S., who had been in my acting class, and others, including a woman named Jeanne Hunter. We fell into conversation at the free books table and I found she's been a volunteer for the museum for several years. Told her I was looking into it.
As the meeting wound down--not soon enough for my taste, I'm afraid--Sue took me aside and asked if I'd like to go to lunch. Do I ever turn down an invitation? Of course not, and we went to the nearby, newly opened Blue Agave.
I like this place a lot. It's Mexican, but good, and I had a soft taco/enchilada combo plate and an IPA. Sue had a salada in a big edible shell. After she had finished the salad, we both nibbled at the shell, sort of like Hansel and Gretel.  I was taken aback when Sherry suddenly came in to give Sue her card "in case you don't have my number." As Sue said later, maybe we should have asked her to stay, but Sue just wanted to talk to me and as she said, "Sherry is so needy." Yes, she is and she can be a pain in the ass, too. Since it wasn't even quite 11:30 when we sat down, I was surprised at myself that I could eat that early, but I did and enjoyed it.
We talked and talked. Sue's husband, Mac, is sinking deeper and deeper into dementia and essentially, she has no family at all.  Her parents and only sister are gone and she has a somewhat remote relationship with Mac's daughter, who lives in Georgia. Anyway, it's all on her, all the time. However, she was relieved to talk to me about it, and we both enjoyed the lunch.
Got home, changed, and got a call from Nancy. Unfortunately, her allergies are very bad and she probably won't make it to lunch today. Neither will Carole or Sue, as they both have ailing husbands, so I guess it will be just Doris, Sherry, and me.
Did the usual town walk. Had a weird dinner: a large bowl spinach, dressed with olive oil, lime juice, and garlic; a can of peas; and a can of pickled beets.  One of my rules is to have protein at every meal--well, I didn't at this one, but once in six months or so, I guess it's okay.
I got up for the usual about 3:00 and just couldn't get back to sleep for what seemed like hours. Every once in a while this happens and it wish it wouldn't.

Script And Stuff

I always sit down at the computer with my coffee first thing and saw that Nancy had e-mailed  me that, regretfully, she was sneezing and coughing and didn't feel up to our date today. Too bad, but it was just as well because I then read a message from Connie K., of the Maritime Museum, asking if I could send her my script.
Yikes! I haven't even thought about it, let alone written it, and as for memorizing it--ha!  So it was good I had some time to do that, as I also had to buy fruit for the compote I'm bringing to BCNN today.
Spent a lot of time on the script after Kimball and breakfast. I want it to reflect authentic seventeenth-century Holland, which means I had to research a lot on the Internet. I also want to incorporate some Dutch words and happily, was able not only to see them translated, but to hear them spoken. Tried on my costume. I'm not entirely happy with it, as the blouse is much too big, but I rolled up the sleeves and turned it backward, which looks better.  I put crumpled up newspaper in my basket, covered it with a white cloth, and added my fish. Looks pretty good and will look better with the additional fish Connie said she had gotten
Put that aside to go to WinCo for fresh strawberries and blueberries, plus frozen mangoes and blackberries; they combine well. Sliced up the strawberries, plus used the Chop Wizard on cucumbers and chicken for lunch.
I had gotten a tulip for El, too, so decided to drive up to Ojai, leave it for her, and take my walk there. I did leave it with on note on her porch, but decided to go back to town after all, as I wanted to see if they had any books on Holland.
While at the library, I feel into conversation with a man who's a pilot. He used to fly for an airline, but is now 80 and, I guess, put out to pasture. He has his own  plane, though, and few it here from Arizona, where he lives, to visit his son.
Ellen called after dinner to thank me for the tulip plant and we talked about me getting a laptop. My computer, I'm afraid, has been very cranky lately and may be on its last legs. We discussed going next weekend (not this coming) to look, but instead, El suggested I start looking on-line, which I will.

Widder Lunch And Tulip

After Kimball and breakfast, I changed my bed and took sheets and clothes to the laundry annex.  Realized I had enough quarters for wash, but not for dry, and didn't feel like driving to the bank, so went to the office, thinking Jim might keep a stash. Well, he doesn't, but he, Bianca, and Javier were all there and they pooled their change to come up with the five I needed. They refused to take the dollar I proffered, so I'll stop in and repay them with quarters when I have a chance.
While I waited for the clothes to dry, I continued my memorabilia project. Used one of the loose leaf books I bought for "early Byrne" documents. These include both of my parents' birth and death certificates, their  marriage license, and letters from my Uncle Tom regarding the Pennsylvania property they sold.
I was pleased to get a call from Jeannie Painter (nee Dollard) and we had a good talk. She's worried about her paramour (well, that's what he is), John, who felt sick and went back to bed. He's 88, fer cryin' out loud, but he takes care of her and vice versa, you might say.
Went to the widder lunch and had a good time. However, I brought my tangerines, as I really don't want anything off the Sizzler menu. There were seven of us, including a newcomer named Ann. She's an R.N. at Los Postos(?) Hospital in Camarillo, and what an interesting person. She's the fifth of sixteen children, all from the same two parents and with no multiples--wow! Good conversationalist; her husband died two years ago, and she's the same age as my older son. Nancy was there and we confirmed our plans to go to the movie today, with wine after.
Did the town walk and stayed at the library for a bit. I was wearing only a light sweater and when I came out, it had dropped about 20 degrees--chilly.
I had left a tulip with a note for Suzanne and when I got home, she came over to thank me and stopped in for a bit. She asked if I would mind picking her up at the auto body shop on Friday, as she needs something done to her car. Sure, I'll be glad to--she's certainly been helpful to me.

Dudley

After Kimball and the rest of the Sunday routine, I laid our my docent duds, then showered and washed my hair.  Had a light lunch of leftovers--just sauteed mushrooms and a bowl of spinach--then put on my Victorian matron (or a proximity thereof) clothes.
Got to Dudley House early, but it was pleasant enough on a bench under the trees. Lynn came shortly after and opened the place, talking all the time, as ever. We had thought we have few, or even no. visitors, but we had a fair number, maybe because the Super Bowl didn't start until 3:30.  Did my tour spiel, adding a few notes when appropriate, and it was a pretty enjoyable day. Lynn and I are both going to be characters at the Maritime Museum on the eighteenth and we chatted about that. She's done it for several years and impersonates a whaler's wife. She was interested in my seventeenth-century Dutch gal and said I'd enjoy it all.
We left at 4:00 and I immediately went home and changed. I wasn't about to skip my town walk, and I didn't. Luckily, it wasn't quite as crowded as it had been on Saturday, so I did the usual. Of course, by the time I got to the libary, it was after 5:00 and closed, but no prob, I just walked back.
That was the start of a pretty busy week: widder lunch today, movie with Nancy on Tuesday, BCNN Wednesday (and I'm bringing fruit), lunch with Carole and the others on Thursday, and T.O.P.S. on Friday. Of  course, none of them are all-day things, and all should be fun.

Various

Kimball, etc.  After breakfast, I went to Wal-Mart for bubble mailing envelopes to send the kiddies their little Valentine gifts. They had none of the right size, so went to the 99 Cent store; they didn't have any at all. However, I ran into Lennie (Lenore) W., who was buying tulips. She and I chatted for a good half hour (she's our T.O.P.S. leader), then I bought three pretty tulip plants myself. I think I'll give one to Ellen, one to Suzanne, and keep one for myself.
Home, I wrapped up the presents, having decided to just use the large envelopes I already have. Took them to the P.O. and sent them off. It's incredible what the postage set me back--roughly twice as much as the little trinkets cost.
I was pleased that the fish I ordered came in the mail. Unfortunately, it's pretty clearly a fresh-water fish, but it'll work, especially since Connie said she had ordered some fish, too.
Went to town and was surprised to see, right across Main Street from the library, a long, long line of people, six or so abreast, snaking 'way down Main and up California Street to the park at Thompson. Then I realized the show for Thomas fire victims was starting at 1:00 and would continue until 9:00, with Kevin Costner being the main attraction. I assume there were vendors of all kinds in the park, too. If I was ten years younger, I might have waited in line, but no...
As I left the library, Ellen returned my call and we talked for a half hour or so. I suggested dinner at Jasmine Thai, but she's on Bistro M.D. again, so declined. A few minutes after we hung up, Betty called. She said she has to get a new furnace to the tune of about $3600. She'll get some more estimates.
I was delighted to receive in the mail school pictures of my two great-grandsons. I had put Vivian's and Violet's pictures on Facebook, so gave them equal time. It always strikes me funny that my great-grandchildren are older than my grandchildren.

T.O.P.S. And Town

Kimball, then T.O.P.S. Got weighed and DARN!  I again lost a minuscule amount and am now 49.9 pounds down, so still haven't hit the 50 pound mark. I hope and trust I will next week, though.
Trinity Lutheran, our new meeting place, is far superior to the library branch where we met for a month and it's about a six-minute drive for me, so that's good.  The meeting itself was a long, drawn-out bore, with much too much superfluous chatter.  Lennie--just like her predecessor, Lolly--seems unable to control it. She asked if anyone would be a "guest leader" and I volunteered for next time. I'm toying with the idea of having the group examine all the conventional wisdom about weight gain and loss, so much of which is questionable  or bogus.
Didn't get home until 10:30, so was hungry for breakfast. Betty called and we talked for a bit; she's losing weight, also, semi-following my regimen.  I heard back from Sherry, Nancy, Doris, and Carole about our lunch date, which will be next Thursday at Stephen's Greek Restaurant. Didn't hear a word from Sue and I'm not going to call her. I assume I'll see her on Wednesday at BCNN, anyway.
Did my town walk. Lots of people on the streets, as Kevin Costner and others will be here for a big show to benefit Thomas Fire victims; I think that's happening tonight. They were setting up tents and so on for the event.
I'm again annoyed with the library. I'm planning a Toastmasters talk on Emily Dickinson and the damn place has a bio of her and a few others about her, but doesn't have her collected poems! I requested it--no doubt it'll come from the east coast, where T.V. actors may not be considered the shining stars of human achievement.

Here And There

I left a little early for my Kimball walk, so was home by 7:40. I don't like to have breakfast that early, so did a little more with the photos. After breakfast, I finally finished the "Early Byrne" album; I have several more albums to go.
Went out for blueberries and a few other items, then saw that my phone coverage had been suspended. What? Why? After all kinds of this and that, back and forth with Cricket's "chat" person, I just said the hell with it, got in the car, and went to the Cricket store.  Amanda was there and I explained that the bank said it wouldn't accept the payment Cricket instituted, so she put it in and now the bank said it wouldn't accept my debit card. I knew that was idiotic, as I had used it a few hours before, so I rushed to the bank and it was all straightened out. It seems Cricket had my earlier card number, the one I lost, but not the new one--AAGH! This kind of thing drives me crazy!
After lunch, I drove for the third day this week to Oxnard and finally found Greg at work. We greeted each other with a hug, chatted a bit--he wants to resume painting, which he's done before--then I walked around the center before saying goodbye.
Went from there to town, did my walk and tried unsuccessfully to find a book about seventeenth-century Holland in the  library. All I could locate was something on Rembrandt--well, at least he was of the era--which gave me some backdoor info, you might say. One thing I miss from the east coast is the caliber of the libraries--this is Philistine land.
On my way back to the museum, I stopped in there and asked about docent opportunities. Suz had mentioned that and I thought I might like it. Got an application and the card of the director; will talk to her eventually.
Called Carole F. after dinner to remind her that, starting today, T.O.P.S. will meet at Trinity Lutheran. She probably won't attend, though, as her husband, Vane (yep, that's his name) has had a number of T.I.A. episodes and a stroke is suspected. He's getting various tests now.

Goodbye, VCS

Kimball: check. Breakfast: check. Crossword: check.
Then I had to ponder whether to withdraw--"resign" sounds a little grandiose for this gig--from Ventura Council for Seniors and made a decision. Went early to Suz'es office and told her I was relinguishing my vice-chair position on VCS.
I was afraid she might be 1. angry or 2. hurt, but happily, she wasn't. I told her I wasn't contributing anything and in order to do that, I'd have to make myself familiar with the workings of government and so on, and frankly, I didn't want to expend the time and effort; it's too much like work and if I work, I want to get paid for it. Suz understood completely and is anxious to throw the whole thing over herself, or at least have it morph into something else. We ended up chatting happily for another half hour. I asked how her cancer was and she said she's on oral medication now. She hugged me when I left, said she loves me (she's the demonstrative type) and she'll get in touch so we can have dinner or drinks. Great. And I'm much relieved that's over with.
I mentioned to Suz I had seen Three Billboard... and she said Frances McDermond and Joel Coen live in Ojai! Wow, they're Ellen's neighbors--exciting! On that theme, I forgot to mention yesterday that the theatre was jammed. It was dollar day and all the old people come out for that. Incredibly, considering the theme and the language, people actually applauded it, Nance and I joining in.
I went from Suz'es office to bravely take the 101 to Oxnard for the second day in a row. Went to Whole Foods and darned if Greg wasn't off again. Maybe I'll go back today, as I think if I keep doing, I'll get more comfortable with the freeway.
Mike got a tax thing and I dropped it off to the P.O.  Went from there to Staples for ink, then home for lunch, then town. At The Coalition, I picked up four large loose leaf binders, which I'll equip with plastic sleeves and use for photos and memorabilia. Stopped at Deb's office (she owns The Lynd Group, a financial advisory firm), but she was in a meeting. Left her a note to call me, which she did after dinner. I told I had resigned, she understood, and we talked; assured each other we'd keep in touch.

TUESDAY

I started off the morning with some annoying problems with Amazon Japan re Christmas gifts, but I don't want to go into detail.  Left at...
