At 5:07 into this video, shame struck me afresh. That helicopter? I spent 1981 - 1984 working on a small part of that.
I am a piece of shit. A repentant piece, but what I did is done.
If you're a piece of shit, so am I and so is everybody else who considered themselves :patriotic." I, for one, spent most of my life blindly accepting the hubris surrounding the death and destruction we inflict on the world as somehow normal and right. How could we be so oblivious for so long, Jim?
That leads to another not-so-cheerful thought. I'm a fairly smart person, as people go, which isn't saying much, really. You're a very smart person, as is easy to see from your writing. And it took both of us way too long to wake up. How's anything going to change? Particularly, how are 18-, 19-, and 20-year-olds expected to think independently and critically and stay away from the damned military? I really don't see how.
Unfortunately, I couldn't agree more, Jim. Even those who are "against" some particular military action seem never to fathom that militarism itself--I don't care how it's prettied up--is a crime against humanity. Of course, you're right about young people, but how could the majority resist all the "hero" stuff, let alone money for college or free parking or whatever the hell the bribes of the day are? Teach critical thinking from kindergarten up? Perish the thought!
